Green Datacentres Vital to Reducing ICT Carbon Footprint

Research news published: Tuesday 31st July 2007

Managing the energy used by major IT systems and reducing the heat output from datacentres are the key concerns for public sector bodies looking at how to reduce their carbon footprints.

This was the finding of a group of experts and stakeholders assembled by Headstar ahead of our inaugural November 29 conference on the issue. The conference steering group included representatives from the local government Society for IT Management (Socitm), the Local Government Association, the NHS IT Programme, and companies including IBM, Fujitsu and PA Consulting. Other topics highlighted by the steering group s of key importance to greening IT in the public sector included the use of videoconferencing to reduce travel; and ensuring an organisation's carbon management plan covers ICT.

One steering group member from the public sector stressed the need for the confernece to help public sector bodies prioritise their actions - "This is a very broad area, and most organisations would fail if they were to try to make progress on such a broad front. Where is the most pressing need, and where could we have a significant impact most quickly?"

The November conference is now in planning and will be opened for registration in September. Please watch this website for further news or email dan@headstar.com with the subject line 'Techno-footprint: notify' to be infomred when the conference website goes live.
