Campaign For Accessible Mobile Phones Launched In US.

A campaign has been launched to support vision impaired Americans who have problems accessing mobile phone services. The campaign, co-ordinated by the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), will raise awareness of Section 255, a part of the Federal Communications Act that requires all phones to be made usable by people with disabilities.

International Trials For Groundbreaking Scanner.

A device is under development that combines a scanner and labeller with voice output, radio, mp3 player, talking clock, voice recorder and audio book player, for the first time in a single unit.

Web 1.0 – Lessons learnt?

Whether you think Web 2.0 is just marketing hyper-spin, or whether you believe it’s the latest web based revolution, one thing’s for sure: It’s having one hell of an effect on accessibility. The big question though, is whether we learnt our lesson with Web 1.0.

DRC to pilot use of WordBank

During May and June the DRC website will be piloting use of WordBank the innovative multimedia definitions library. WordBank definitions include Text, images and video animations to illustrate the meaning of complex words and are of particular value to those experiencing a learning disability. If you live in the UK, you now have access to a dictionary of 5,000 words in British Sign Language (BSL) and their accompanying downloadable videos for your cellphones.

IBM to make streamed media more accessible

IBM have announced a Browser plug-in that will make embedded streamed media more accessible including facilitating stop/start/play, forward/rewind, variable speed, independant volume control, and optional described narrative (where appropriate meta data is available) where all this functionality is not accessible through the default interface used by the site and even where it is not available via the primary interface.

Users Flock to Free Document Conversion Service.

A free service allowing people to convert documents automatically to and from Braille and synthetic speech, accessed by email, is receiving some 15,000 to 20,000 new requests per month, E-Access Bulletin has learned.

Assistive Products Gear Up Fast For Windows Vista.

Assistive technology manufacturers have responded more quickly to create versions of their products compatible with Microsoft’s latest operating system Vista than with previous releases of Windows, E-Access Bulletin has learned.
